What Lip Filler Can Do
Lip filler is not one thing. It can add volume to lips that have always been thin or that have thinned with age. It can sharpen a border that's gotten soft. It can correct asymmetry between the sides or between the top and bottom lip. It can smooth the fine vertical lines that form at the edges. Or it can do something so subtle that only you notice. The plan starts with what you're hoping to change, not with a syringe.
Revanesse vs. Juvederm Ultra
We use two products for lips, and they suit different goals.
Revanesse is our standard. It's a smooth hyaluronic acid gel that integrates softly into the lip, produces a natural feel, and tends to cause less swelling than some other fillers. It's a good fit for subtle enhancement, definition, hydration and balance.
Juvederm Ultra has a bit more body. We reach for it when someone wants noticeably fuller lips, or when the border needs more structure to hold its shape. It's the choice for a more visible change.
If you're not sure, Revanesse is the safer starting point. You can always add more volume at a later visit, and you'll have a feel for how your lips respond.

What to Expect at Home
Dr. Bashian or Rachel Fey, PA will look at your lips at rest and while you talk and smile, discuss what you want, and apply numbing cream. Both fillers also contain lidocaine. Lips swell more than any other area, so expect them to look fuller than the final result for two to three days, sometimes with some bruising. Ice helps. Avoid hot drinks, strenuous exercise and lipstick for the first day. The settled result is visible at two weeks.
How Long It Lasts
Six to twelve months for most people. The lips move constantly, which breaks down filler faster than other areas. The first syringe often wears off on the earlier end of that range. With regular maintenance, results tend to last longer. Individual results vary.
Who It's For
Adults who want fuller, more defined or more balanced lips, at any level of change. It's also for people whose lips have thinned with age and want them back to where they were. If you have an active cold sore, we'll reschedule, since filler can trigger an outbreak. If you're prone to cold sores, tell us and we can advise on preventive medication. We do not treat anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding.
Risks and Side Effects
Swelling and bruising are the norm for the first few days. Small lumps can occasionally be felt and usually resolve within two weeks; if not, they can be massaged or dissolved. Cold sores can be triggered in people who get them. Rarely, filler can be injected into a blood vessel, which is a medical emergency that both Dr. Bashian and Rachel Fey, PA are trained to recognize and treat on the spot with hyaluronidase. Individual results vary.
