Fillers
Over time the face loses volume in the lips, support under the cheeks and softness in the folds around the mouth, and the face can start to look older than you feel. Filler puts that back. Dr. Chris Bashian or Rachel Fey, PA injects it in your own home across South Jersey and the Philadelphia area, with a surgeon's understanding of what sits under the skin.
How It Works
As we age, the face loses fat, bone and collagen in a fairly predictable pattern. Cheeks flatten, lips thin, and the folds around the mouth deepen because the tissue above them has slid down. Dermal fillers are smooth gels injected beneath the skin to replace that lost structure. Most are made from hyaluronic acid, a sugar your body already produces, which binds water and gives skin its plumpness. One filler we use, Radiesse, is made from calcium hydroxylapatite and stimulates your own collagen in addition to adding volume. The right filler for you depends on the area and the result you want.

Revanesse, Juvederm Ultra and Restylane are hyaluronic acid fillers, so they can be dissolved if you ever want them gone. Radiesse cannot, which is one of the things we'll discuss before using it.
Hyaluronic acid fillers in the lips last six to twelve months. In areas with less movement, like smile lines, they can last a year or more. Radiesse typically lasts twelve to eighteen months. Everyone metabolizes filler at a different rate, and the first syringe tends to wear off faster than later ones. Individual results vary.
Dr. Bashian or Rachel Fey, PA will go over what you're hoping to change, look at the area from several angles, and agree on a plan and a price with you. Most fillers contain lidocaine, and we can apply a topical numbing cream as well, so discomfort is minimal. Swelling and some bruising are normal for the first few days, especially in the lips. You'll see the result immediately, and the final, settled result at about two weeks.
Swelling, bruising and tenderness are expected and short-lived. Small lumps can sometimes be felt in the first two weeks and usually settle on their own. Rare but serious complications include infection and, very rarely, injection into a blood vessel, which can affect blood flow to the skin. This is the reason filler should be injected by someone who knows facial anatomy in detail. Dr. Bashian is a surgeon, and both he and Rachel Fey, PA carry hyaluronidase, the medication that dissolves hyaluronic acid filler, to every appointment. Individual results vary.
The fillers we use contain lidocaine, and we can numb the area beforehand. Most people describe pressure more than pain.
